Think of it as a muscle that needs to be exercised regularly in order to strengthen it. If sourpuss is your go-to muscle then you are only seeing the negative in everything including noticing all those rapidly-forming frown lines in the mirror.
Here is a new workout for you: Find 5 things to be happy or grateful for and write it in a journal. Do this every day for at least 30 days. Much a like a new workout regime, you've got to stick with it to see results! If you find that pesky sourpuss muscle kicking in, redirect your focus to your thankful 5 for the day.
Exercising your happiness muscle is a no-sweat, no-gym-membership workout that delivers. I began my happiness workout several years ago at the suggestion of a friend who also gave me a beautiful journal with which to start. That alone was an added incentive to get started!
I've been at it for some time now and I'll be honest... some days, I really struggle to come up with 5. Other days, I write for pages and pages. That's because a gratitude journal mirrors the ebb and flow of life.
Just like on some days you don't want to drag your ass to the gym or outdoors for a run, you may not feel up to exercising your happiness muscle. Do it anyway. As Nike says, "Just Do It!" Those few minutes spent being thankful can really shift your perspective from, "My life sucks" to "Oh yeah, I do have some good things happening!".
And let me tell you baby, when you FEEL good, you LOOK good. Over time, you won't even notice those frown lines anymore but will discover that you have a beautiful smile, a pep in your step and bright eyes that radiate light and warmth. People will be drawn to you and feel inspired by you without even knowing why!
If they ask, just tell them it's your new workout.
So, what do you say? Are you up to taking on the Happiness Workout? What are your thankful 5 for the day? Please share with us! Remember, sharing your words may inspire others to do the same and we all about inspiring others at Inspired Elephant.
