Hiya Herd! To me, September has always felt like the true new year. It marks the end of summer and vacations, the beginning of shorter days, cooler temps and the school year for kids. There is just something really pivotal about September. Additionally, for our Jewish friends, it IS in fact a new year. Shana Tova! We are a little over a week into September and in this timeframe, I’ve taken a family vacation, moved my son into boarding school over 600 miles away from home and in a few hours, sending my eldest off to college across the Atlantic Crazy, right? That’s a shitload of change all at once - kind of like guzzling water from a firehose. At least, that’s how I feel. |
I also feel excited. I’ve been to the change rodeo more than once in my life and I know that when I am going through major change, I am about to level up.
That’s right, folks. September is also Level-up Season.
I am a mom of gamers so if you are not familiar with the term "leveling up", it’s a concept in which a character experiences some sort of progression that usually entails unlocking new abilities or skills, or access to new items or areas of the game.
It's growth in game-speak.
So it’s not just me leveling up here, my kids are leveling up too. Apparently, I am raising some bold-ass, think-outside-the-box humans here. These are changes they pursued and invited into their lives.
I’m just along for the ride.
The ride to leveling up is not easy. Sure, it’s exciting but it’s also bumpy and challenge-filled. Sometimes, it feels like the ground you are standing on is crumbling all around you.
But that’s because you are about to earn wings and fly.
Who needs a crumbling floor when you can fly?
Does this sound at all familiar to you? Are you leveling up as well?
Hear are some tried and true signs that you are leveling up and about to earn those wings:
You know the drill. You’ve battled before. And you’ve triumphed. So, congrats! Leveling up is ALWAYS a good thing. Even if it doesn't feel like it right now.
It won’t be long until you get your stride back. But this time, you’ll be more evolved with a little more sass in your step. The stakes will be higher and far more exciting. You’ll have more help and support than ever before.
Everything will mean more.
Like holidays together, cute emoji-filled text banter, good night kisses, family vacations, and dinners.
By the way, Herd Sisters, these words were for me as well. I am excited as hell for my kids but (sigh). Things will sure feel different around here.
GLHF, (that's "Good luck, have fun" in game-speak!)
Carolyn

Hear are some tried and true signs that you are leveling up and about to earn those wings:
- Your situation is shifting from the familiar to unchartered waters (cue scary Jaws music)
- Your relationships are shifting, with one or more possibly ending. No worries, that leaves room for new ones to enter!
- You can sense, possibly even envision a new life for yourself.
- Your fear is subsiding because these changes are happening regardless. So what’s the point of being scared. It’s time to get ready!
