Hello Herd!
This Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day. I will be kicking off the celebration on Saturday by honoring my mother at the first local LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER production (LTYM).
The goal of every LTYM production is to take the audience on a well-crafted journey of diverse true stories about motherhood—being a mom, having a mom, losing a mom, finding a mom—as many interpretations on the theme of mothering as you can imagine. From hilarious and heartwarming, to emotionally intense and profound.
When I was first asked to write and present a piece, I wasn’t sure I was up for the task. I’m not nervous of public speaking but I’m 100% nervous about being judged and this was supposed to be a personal piece. I’m not sure how personal I was willing to be in a room of strangers.

When I was first asked to write and present a piece, I wasn’t sure I was up for the task. I’m not nervous of public speaking but I’m 100% nervous about being judged and this was supposed to be a personal piece. I’m not sure how personal I was willing to be in a room of strangers.
So, there I was contemplating the offer when the dreaded emotion… FEAR hit me like a wall. So much so that I almost declined.
Luckily, I have a teen daughter that LISTENS TO HER MOTHER, because there she was reciting to me what I always tell her. . .” DON’T LET FEAR STOP YOU.”
She was right. This was an opportunity to grow, to push past my comfort zones and to embrace my truth (no matter what others think).
With her advice ringing in my ear, I began to write multiple versions of what motherhood meant to me. There were so many different stories, concepts, and many, many, many drafts until I finally landed on what I had to say.
This Saturday I will share that story out loud. And I am terrified. What will people think? Will they like what I wrote? Will it resonate with the audience? Will I honor my mother properly? Will I make my kids proud? SOOOO many questions, so much FEAR, but I am determined to push past all of it.
I’m going into this event with gratitude for the opportunity it has provided. Preparing my story has taken me down memory lane and reminded me that I can and have overcome scary moments. It’s time that I LISTEN TO MY MOTHER and not let fear stop me.
Guess the producers of this show have it right, we should all LISTEN TO OUR MOTHERS and sometimes even our daughters 😉
