Hiya Herd! This past weekend, I was lazing (yes, it is a word) in bed enjoying the sunlight streaming through the window and sipping on my warm beverage when my SO innocently asked: "So, what’s on your plate today?" Insert record scratching sound. In a split second, my brain went into full-on retrieval mode. My peace was gone and I started spouting out all the things I had to do and problems I had to work through. Each one I listed led to another yet unforeseen, but very possible future problem. Before I knew it, I was in full-on OVERWHELM. All before breakfast! On a Saturday morning, no less. I am proud I recognized it about 10 minutes in. I stopped mid-sentence by announcing, “I cannot start the day like this. I am ruining it before it had a chance to get started”. |
I excused myself and tried meditating to quiet my brain, and writing in my gratitude journal to shift my focus which helped some, but the runaway train was already in motion.
In order to stop the momentum, I knew it was time to pull out the big guns; my all time favorite tool - visualization.
Visualization is POWERFUL and so easy to do!
All it takes is your imagination to shift your focus from "shouIds", "have-to’s", and problems, to fresh starts, solutions. and ease.
Here is what I did: I closed my eyes and visualized this proverbial plate that was stressing me out so much. I saw a buffet before me and looked back at the empty plate in my hand.
I thought, “Its’ my freakin' plate. What do I WANT to put on it?”
The answer? Only good things!
I wouldn’t add anything that I “should” have or didn’t like such as iceberg lettuce or olives.
I approached the buffet and began filling my plate with things I really desire like sushi and fresh guac and bypassed the stuff I don’t.
This simple exercise calmed me down (and yes, made me hungry).
The answer to, “What is on your plate today?” is what you CHOOSE to place there.
Isn’t that such an empowering thought???
My initial response to that question had me moving mental mountains in front of my path when in fact, there had been none upon waking.
My post-visualization response included going for a hike that morning, watching a movie that evening and then tackling 1-2 items in between. No overwhelm involved.
And guess what? I tackled those items with clarity and ease.
Give it a try! Visualization is a nifty little trick you can use anytime, anywhere.
