Reduce Your Mental Overload with Journaling

4/22/2020

Dedicated journaling for 15-20 minutes a day for just three days can address many unresolved emotional events in our lives big or small.  How does this work?  Well, the process of writing itself helps our brain to organize complex feelings. So, writing out complex feelings helps our mind and the body let go, organize, and process emotions.

The best part is how simple it is for it to have such a powerful, positive impact. Ready to give it a try?
What you will need:
  • 15- 20 minutes of uninterrupted time for 3 consecutive days
  • A timer (best if not your cell phone – it can be distracting)
  • A plain spiral notebook or loose-leaf paper (less pressure than a pretty journal)
  • A pen (because you process information differently when writing)

Getting Started:
  • Set your timer for 15-20 minutes and write without thinking about grammar, style, who will read it or anything else. Just free-write. Think about it as a brain dump, or as we prefer to say it, a brain release. Really tap into your emotions — your deepest thoughts, worries, and concerns. Take time to explore those feelings. Try to tie those current feeling to past events.

Afterward:
  • Accept and let go! When you are done take a moment to read the words out loud (to hear them spoken gives them weight). Now, let go of them and what they represent by throwing the pieces away or burning them.

Back to Reality:
  • These “brain releases” can get emotional so, time to re-center yourself. Take a few deep breaths and ready yourself to re-engage with the world, hopefully feeling more centered and aware of your needs.
As shown in multiple studies, writing about your emotions improves your life — it leads to better health, stronger personal connections, and overall success.  We have experienced it firsthand and encourage you to give it a try.
