Hiya Herd,
It is amazing how quickly our lives can become drab and boring if we do not have something to look forward to. These past 9 months of hunkering down with our families and minimizing our contact with the outside world can make one day just meld into the next. It can make life seem like one long and monotonous day.
While we always promote mindful living and being in the moment, sometimes our current moment just ain’t all that.
In stressful times, like our current pandemic, it is also important to have something to look forward to.
We all need something to look forward to.
I cannot stress this enough.
And I didn’t fully appreciate this until I received my first holiday gathering invitation for this season. It made me so freaking happy! You would have thought I was invited to the Oscars. This invitation was quickly followed by a friend’s virtual birthday celebration. After that, a couples virtual wine tasting with friends.
My mood instantly shifted. I had something(s) to look forward to. Fun things. And they weren’t some far off “someday” things. There were dates and times in the calendar.
These events on my calendar gave me a healthy dose of anticipation that energized me.
Light bulb moment! Anticipation is another self-care tool that you can utilize to help get you through these tough times.
So when your present feels frustrating, tedious, or intolerable, have something to look forward to. If you don't have something, create it!
Look, it doesn’t have to be elaborate.
It can be a bubble bath.
Or scheduling a zoom call with friends.
Or watching your favorite holiday claymation movie with your family. I promise you, having something to look forward to is a total game changer in terms of mood and energy.
Take a moment and think about it: “What are you currently looking forward to?”
If nothing is written in your calendar, schedule it! Even this small act of putting something on the calendar can help build anticipation. We are not above Jedi-mind tricks at Inspired Elephant. Work, they do! #yodaspeak
You know what else also helps? Sharing some good ideas. Please share what you are looking forward to or if any suggestions you may have. Your suggestion may be just the spark of inspiration someone needs to get out of their rut. Please share here.
With anticipation,
Carolyn
