Ocean Waves of Mindfulness: Reflecting on Vacation

As women, we often find ourselves juggling countless responsibilities, from work and family to social commitments and personal goals. Amid this whirlwind, it can be challenging to carve out time for ourselves, let alone for quality time with our loved ones. However, stepping away from work and truly unplugging can be a transformative experience, allowing us to focus on what truly matters: people and the present moment.

Recently, I had the opportunity to take a break from my busy schedule and spend a few days by the ocean with my family. With no plans other than to relax and enjoy each other's company, I was immersed in a state of mindfulness unlike any other. As I sat on the beach, feeling the warm sun on my skin and listening to the soothing sound of the waves, I realized how rarely I allow myself to fully unplug. Even when I'm not working, my mind is often racing with thoughts about what needs to be done next or worries about the future. But in that moment, all of those distractions melted away, and I was able to be fully present with my family.

Watching my teenage children knocking on the door of adulthood as we shared stories that prompted uncontrollable laughter, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this precious time together. As the reality of becoming an empty nester looms, I cherish this time together. Their laughter, their quirks, their growing independence – all reminders of the incredible journey we've had and the exciting chapter ahead.

Being in nature, surrounded by the ocean's vastness, helped put things into perspective. The stresses and pressures of daily life seemed to fade into the background, replaced by a sense of peace and clarity. As the days passed, I found myself reflecting on the lessons the ocean was teaching me. Just as the waves ebb and flow, so too does life. There are times of calm and turbulence, but if we learn to ride the waves with grace and resilience, we can navigate even the most challenging circumstances.

The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths, it has its pearls too.
— Vincent van Gogh

I also learned the importance of letting go of the need to always be in control. The ocean doesn't follow a strict itinerary; it flows freely, guided by the rhythms of nature. Similarly, when we allow ourselves to let go of our need for control and simply be present in the moment, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and experiences. Most importantly, my time by the ocean reminded me of the value of connection. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of nurturing our relationships with others. But when we take the time to connect with the people we love truly, we nourish our souls in a way that no amount of work or productivity ever could.

So, to all the women out there who are constantly juggling a million things at once, I urge you to take a step back and prioritize what truly matters. Take the time to unplug, to be present with your loved ones, and to soak in the beauty of the world around you. You'll be amazed at the peace and clarity that comes from simply sitting by the ocean with no plans.
